Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has proposed March 30 as a new national Flag Day, encouraging citizens to display the Czech flag. The initiative, announced in his New Year’s speech, has renewed interest in the flag’s history and meaning, particularly the blue triangle at the hoist, which remains a subject of debate.

The red, white, and blue flag was first adopted in 1920 for Czechoslovakia to distinguish it from Poland’s white-and-red banner.
