Easter closures: Are stores in the Czech Republic open on Good Friday?

In advance of the long weekend, many Czechs stock up on "Green Thursday"

Good Friday this year falls on on April 19th and Easter Monday on April 22nd – with the Czech Republic recognizing Good Friday as a public holiday since 2016, that means four days off for the Easter holiday instead of three.

For schoolchildren the holiday is even longer: elementary and secondary schools are closed on Thursday, April 18 for Easter holidays. (Kids return to school on Tuesday, April 23, 2019).

A law also took effect in 2016 stating that all large shops – over 200 square meters in size – must close on seven significant state holidays including Easter Monday.

Though some businesses have found loopholes around the law, for those who need to stock up for the Monday Easter celebration, it’s probably wise to head to the stores over the weekend.

Large retailers can remain open on Good Friday and this year many of them are extending opening hours Thursday-Sunday (including some Globus locations) to accommodate the “Green Thursday” shopping rush.

Smaller shops and e-shops may remain open on Monday. Rohlik.cz, for instance will be available from 7 am to 11 pm on Monday, according to the company.

Many large shopping centers such as Chodov and Palladium will stay open throughout the Easter holiday, though any hypermarkets or other stores located within those centers which are larger than 200 square meters must stay shuttered.
