Czech Republic Takes First Silver in Rio

Kayaker Josef Dostál scored a silver medal at yesterday’s 1000m kayak sprint, bringing the total Czech count up to seven

After a gold and five bronzes, the Czech Republic now has silver at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio as kayaker Josef Dostál took second place yesterday in the men’s K-1 1000m canoe sprint.

In a tight race, Spain’s Marcus Walz surged ahead in the final 100m to take gold, while Dostál came in half a second behind.

Portugal’s Fernando Pimenta, who led for most of the race, fell back to fifth during the final sprint.

Dostál was also part of a Czech team that scored a bronze in the K-4 1000m canoe sprint at the London 2012 games.

On Friday, he will compete in that event once more alongside teammates Jan Štěrba, Daniel Havel, and Lukáš Trefil.

The silver medal brings the Czech Republic’s total count up to seven, with a gold from judoka Lukáš Krpálek and five bronzes, three from Czech tennis stars over the weekend, one from rower Ondřej Synek, and another from fellow kayaker Jiří Prskavec for the canoe slalom.
