Have you helped a stranger in the past month? Donated money to charity? Volunteered your time to an organization?
The World Giving Index is an annual report by the Charities Aid Foundation that ranks countries across the world by how charitable they are.
The research for the Index comes from a Gallup poll that asks citizens of each country the questions above, and reports the findings in a list that ranks the countries surveyed.
The 2015 report was released last month. While the US typically ranks at the top of the Index, they’ve been usurped this year by a (perhaps) surprising country: Myanmar.
Here’s the top 10:
- Myanmar
- United States
- New Zealand
- Canada
- Australia
- United Kingdom
- Netherlands
- Sri Lanka
- Ireland
- Malaysia
You’ll have to scroll pretty far to find the Czech Republic – down on the list at 130 out of the 145 countries surveyed, behind Russia, Venezuela, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Neighboring countries like Germany (20), Austria (23), and Poland (78) fared better, though Slovakia (123) only edged the Czech Republic by a small margin.
Still, some EU countries fared even worse than the Czech Republic. Greece came in at 140 on the list, while Lithuania ranked 142 – only Yemen, China, and Burundi rated worse.
The Czech Republic were ranked much higher in previous years, coming in at 102 in 2013 and 112 in 2014.
Wide swings like this aren’t uncommon in the poll, however. Croatia was ranked 130 last year, but they moved up to 63 in 2015.
