Pavel meets with Argentine President Javier Milei
Czech President Petr Pavel met today with his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei in the presidential Casa Rosada residence in Buenos Aires. The two leaders already met two years ago in Prague, but this is the first time in 15 years a sitting Czech president visits Argentina. Pavel's trip includes other political and business meetings as well as the inauguration of an exhibition dedicated to Czech geographer Bohumír Janský.
Govt. to reduce budget for Czech TV and radio
The Czech government's plans to cancel license fees for Czech public television and radio and fund them directly from the state budget also means lower funding, Culture Minister Oto Klempíř (Motorist) said today. From next year, Czech Television should see its revenues drop from CZK 6.73 billion to CZK 5.74 billion, while Czech Radio will receive CZK 2.07 billion from the state compred to CZK 2.48 billion collected this year from fees.
Cyber-crimes rose by 37 percent last month
The number of cyber-crimes cases reported to the police rose by 37 percent in March, with Czech authorities reporting more than 2,500 cases in a single month. "This March is the worst month in history in terms of cyber-crime," the Czech Police Presidium said. The most common victims are women with an average age of 46. and scammers tend to target them via mobile phones, investigators said.
Zubr Grand crowned Czechia's best bottled beer
The Zubr Grand beer received the coveted award of best bottled beer at the 34th annual Golden Cup Pivex 2026 competition. About 40 beer brands competed this year in the main bottled beer contest, evaluated by a professional jury in several rounds. Meanwhile, Birell from the Radegast brewery, part of the Pilsner Urquell group, won in the non-alcoholic beer category.
Dormitory on fire in Prague's Žižkov district
The roof of a dormitory in Žižkov caught fire this afternoon, with the fire department first reporting the incident around 3.30 pm. Firefighters have declared the third out of four levels of emergency and residents were being rescued from the building located on Jana Želivského street. No one was reported injured at the time of publication, and the cause of the incident is still unclear.
