It’s a sweep! Almost, at least. Ve stínu (In the Shadows), the Czech Republic’s official selection to the 2013 Academy Awards, has taken the Czech version of the Oscars by storm. Of the 12 main categories it could have been nominated in at this year’s Czech Lion Awards, Ve stínu was up for 11 of them, and has won 9.

The film, a historical drama with film noir overtones set in Prague during the years following World War II, follows a police inspector who runs afoul of a high-reaching criminal conspiracy while investigating a seemingly simple case. It touches on themes of early communist oppression and anti-Semitism in the Czech Republic, during a time when the country was undergoing drastic political changes.

The wins by Ve stínu included Best Picture, Actor (Ivan Trojan), Director (David Ondříček), Screenplay (Marek Epstein, David Ondříček, and Misha Votruba), Cinematography (Adam Sikora), Music (Jan P. Muchow, Michal Novinski), Editing (Michal Lánský), Sound (Pavel Rejholec, Jakub Čech), and Art Design (Jan Vlasák, Lukáš Král, Jarmila Dittrichová-Konečná)

The film’s 9 wins are more than almost all previous winners – including Oscar-winner Kolja and Oscar-nominee Musíme si pomáhat (Divided We Fall) – but come one short of tying the record set by Je třeba zabít Sekala (Sekal Has to Die) in 1998.

It might be indicative of a slow year in Czech film: Ve stínu is impeccably produced, especially for a local feature, so its wins in the technical categories come as no surprise. But it’s also a slow-moving and frequently ponderous film that received mixed reviews from critics, with a final shot that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Other films nominated for Best Picture included Čtyři slunce, from director Bohdan Sláma (Štěstí, which won 7 Lions back in 2005); Odpad město smrt, from Jan Hřebejk (Musíme si pomáhat); Okresní přebor – Poslední zápas Pepika Hnátka, a feature-film version of the popular TV show, and Polski film, from Marek Najbrt, who won with Protektor in 2010.

The sweep by Ve stínu resulted in only assorted acting wins for other features, with Gabriela Míčová winning Best Actress for Odpad město smrt, Klára Melíšková taking Supporting Actress for Čtyři slunce, and Okresní přebor’s Ondřej Vetchý receiving Supporting Actor. David Vondráček’s Láska v hrobě (Love in the Grave) took home the Award for Best Documentary.

Ve stínu, Čtyři slunce, Okresní přebor, and Polski film are currently availlable on local DVD (note: the Čtyři slunce and Polski film DVDs do not contain English subtitles). A DVD release date for Odpad město smrt has not been set.
