At around 5 p.m., the crown traded at CZK 21.46 to the dollar, .05 crowns weaker than at the previous close, according to data published by Patria Online. The dollar was last this expensive in crown terms on June 15, 2025.
The Czech currency remained virtually unchanged against the euro, strengthening by one heller to CZK 24.41 per euro.
Dollar gains reverse part of crown’s rise
The crown strengthened significantly against the dollar during the first half of 2025. The exchange rate moved from approximately CZK 24.59 per dollar in mid-January to CZK 20.92 by the end of June.
Since then, it has generally traded around CZK 21 per dollar before weakening to Thursday’s 15-month low.
A weaker crown makes dollar-denominated goods, services and travel more expensive for people earning in Czech currency. Conversely, people receiving income or holding savings in dollars receive more crowns when exchanging their money.
The move came as new Czech Statistical Office data showed weaker confidence in the domestic economy in September.
Overall economic confidence fell below its long-term average to 99.5 points, missing both market expectations and Komerční banka’s forecast, according to bank analyst Kevin Tran Nguyen.
Business confidence declined during the month, while sentiment among consumers improved.
Prague exchange drops for third day
The Prague Stock Exchange also ended the day lower, with its PX index losing 0.21 percent to close at 2,723.79 points.
It was the market’s third consecutive decline, erasing almost all of Monday’s gain of more than 1 percent.
Komerční banka was among the weaker major listings, falling 1.06 percent to CZK 1,025. Shares in defense companies also declined, with CSG losing 3.65 percent on the Free Market to close at CZK 372.40 and Colt CZ falling 0.67 percent to CZK 894.
The other two major bank stocks posted marginal gains. Erste Bank rose 0.03 percent to CZK 2,980, while Moneta Money Bank added 0.05 percent to CZK 192.80.
Insurance group Vienna Insurance Group climbed 0.83 percent to CZK 1,700. Doosan Škoda Power was the day’s stronger performer, rising 1.75 percent to CZK 495 following the release of its financial results.
Shares in energy company ČEZ finished unchanged at CZK 1,350.
