Cold snap to bring first real taste of autumn to Czechia next week

Czechia is heading for its first distinctly autumnal cold spell of the season, with temperatures set to fall sharply as colder air moves into Central Europe from the north.

The weekend will remain relatively warm, with daytime temperatures climbing above 20 degrees Celsius across much of the country. But a strong cold front arriving from the northwest on Sunday will bring a marked change heading into the new week.

Unlike recent cold fronts, which have generally returned temperatures to normal September levels, the incoming system is expected to bring below-average temperatures.

During the first half of next week, daytime highs across Czechia will generally reach only around 15 degrees Celsius, according to current forecasts. Stronger winds at the beginning of the week could make conditions feel even colder.

At around 1,500 meters above sea level, temperatures are forecast to fall to between zero and 5 degrees Celsius over Central Europe, indicating the arrival of a significantly colder air mass from the north and northwest.

The chilly conditions may not last long, however. Current forecasts suggest a high-pressure system could gradually shift toward Central Europe from around Wednesday. If that happens, temperatures would begin climbing again while rain systems are pushed away from Czechia.

The second half of the week could therefore bring a return to stable, dry and sunny weather, with increasingly mild conditions resembling babí léto, or an Indian summer.

Forecasters caution that the warmer outlook for later next week remains uncertain and will become clearer over the coming days.
