On Tuesday 10th July, Kino Dlabačov kicks off ‘English-Friendly Tuesdays’, a series of award-winning and critically-acclaimed foreign-language films with English subtitles. Thoughtfully curated with an eye on films that might only see a very limited release or rare festival screenings (and then only with Czech subtitles), the programme will offer local English speakers regular opportunities to see the very best of global cinema at the special low price of 80 Kč.

“Czech distributors have a strong slate of fantastic foreign-language films that won’t get the exposure they deserve,” says Kristina Charvátová, the cinema’s manager. “Many of them are destined to be relegated to the Czech film festival circuit, or scheduled at inconvenient times in arthouse cinemas where they might be easily missed.” By delivering a regular roster of compelling, challenging and thought-provoking features, Charvátová aims to draw cinephiles to the state-of-the-art theatre in Prague 6.

Tehran Taboo has scooped up numerous awards internationally, while 120 BPM garnered four awards (including the Grand Prix) at Cannes, then went on to win six César Awards (including Best Film). Loveless took the Jury Prize at Cannes and like On Body and Soul, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. On Body and Soul also picked up both FIPRESCI Prize and Golden Bear at Berlin, and the coveted European Film Award.

So when you’d like to escape the sweltering summer heat (or rain showers) in a modern air-conditioned theatre, or after your partner has pestered you for the umpteenth time about going on a date that doesn’t involve the beer garden, then check out ‘English-Friendly Tuesdays’.

The only cinema in Prague 6, Dlabačov lies under Hotel Pyramida and is conveniently served by tram and bus stop Malovanka (just past Prague Castle on tram routes 22, 23, 25). Recently renovated, the hall features the latest 4K projection techniques with 7.1 surround sound and a capacity of 377 seats. Dlabačov is not only a cinema but also a theatre, concert hall, café and gallery, allowing for a rich cultural experience in one place.
