🍿 NOW IN CINEMAS

A new group of young adults makes a deadly decision in I Know What You Did Last Summer, a sequel-remake of the 1997 slasher classic. Starring Chase Sui Wonders and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the film links back to the original with appearances from Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The Prague Reporter calls it “a largely enjoyable ride undermined by a senseless finale.”

The latest Smurfs film, directed by Chris Miller and penned by South Park scribe Pam Brady, features Rihanna as Smurfette and John Goodman as Papa Smurf. Most local cinemas are only screening a Czech-dubbed version of Smurfs, but the original English-language version can be seen at Cinema City Slovanský dům.

📺 NEW TO STREAMING

The new six-part miniseries Untamed follows a grieving park service agent investigating a body found in Yosemite National Park. Eric Bana leads a cast that includes Sam Neill and Rosemarie DeWitt. The drama blends murder mystery with majestic landscapes at the famed U.S. landmark. Where to watch: Netflix

Now streaming after premiering in cinemas earlier this year, the Europe-set espionage tale The Amateur starring Rami Malek had registered to film in Prague but was instead shot in London, France, and Turkey. The original 1981 film was set in Prague, but filmed in Vienna. The Prague Reporter calls the new version “a slick but senseless spy thriller.” Where to watch: Disney+

A newly restored version of the 1970 Czech comedy Ecce Homo Homolka, which follows a bickering Prague family during one summer Sunday, premiered at this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. It will play at local cinemas this summer (with English subtitles on Monday at Kino Lucerna) and is also available on streaming platforms Canal+ and Voyo. The Prague Reporter calls it “a quintessential Czech comedy that still delights after 55 years.”

🎬 Filmed in Prague

Season 3 of Apple TV+’s sci-fi epic Foundation premiered last weekend, with new episodes dropping every Friday. Based on Isaac Asimov’s influential novels, the series stars Jared Harris as psychohistorian Hari Seldon and Lee Pace as galactic emperor Brother Day. The visually ambitious production was largely shot in the Czech Republic and at Prague Studios during seasons 2 and 3.

🎥 Prague cinema news

Like with Oppenheimer, Prague's Cinema City Flora IMAX will be the only location in the EU to screen Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in the director's preferred IMAX 70mm format. Tickets to the opening night premiere have already sold out a year in advance, but keep an eye out for additional pre-sales. The Greek epic based on Homer's Odyssey features an impressive cast led by Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya.
