Václav Havel to be Honored in Prague Tomorrow

On what would have been the 80th birthday of the esteemed ex-president, celebrations throughout the Czech Republic will be held in his honor

Last month, New York City celebrated Václav Havel Day on September 28, a holiday in the Czech Republic known as Czech Statehood Day. Other cities around the country, such as Washington, D.C., followed suit.

On October 5, 2016, the beloved dissident, playwright, and ex-president would have turned 80, and it seems like all of Prague (and the Czech Republic) is turning out to celebrate.

The biggest event might be Milí spoluobčané (Dear Fellow Citizens), a public gathering at Prague’s Wenceslas Square expected to be attended by thousands of local residents. 

Similar gatherings can be expected to take place in other cities across the Czech Republic, with Brno, Lipnice nad Sázavou, Plzeň, Zlín, and Ostrava already confirmed.

In Prague, festivities presented by actress and singer Emma Smetana will include musical performances from Michal Ambrož & Hudba Praha, Korben Dallas, Mydy Rabycad, and Zrní.

The event will take place from 19:00 – 22:00.

The Wenceslas Square gathering is the latest in a long string of events honoring the Havel, which have taken place throughout 2016 and will continue through the end of the year.
