Train Derails at Masarykovo nádraží

Currently closed, the station is expected to re-open later today

16.7 Update:The station is now fully operational. According to an eyewitness report on Blesk, the train crashed into the platform “at full speed.”

Late last night, a train overshot its arrival into Prague’s Masarykovo nádraží train station, breaking through the station’s bumpers and coming to a rest on the concrete platform beyond the tracks.

Chunks of concrete were torn up and “flew through the front door” of the station, according to iDnes.  

Three people were injured in the incident. Damages are estimated at 4.2 million CZK.

Currently, the station is closed and trains are being diverted through other stations in Prague.

According to Czech Railways, the station is expected to be re-opened this afternoon.

The cause of the accident is currently being investigated. It’s either “technical fault of the train or human error,” Rail Safety spokesman Martin Drápal told iDnes. 

A similar incident occurred last August at Smíchovské nádraží.
