This week's guide to English-friendly Czech cinema and streaming

Awards-season favorite Sentimental Value follows two sisters reunited with their estranged film director father in Oslo. The story explores grief, artistic legacy, and long-standing familial tensions, anchored by a quartet of compelling performances from Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and Elle Fanning.

The Prague Reporter calls it “a deeply moving family drama” and praises its nuanced handling of long-standing tension and subtle emotional storytelling. Sentimental Value is now playing with English subtitles in Prague at Kino Světozor, Kino Lucerna, and Kino Aero.

Filmed in Prague and other Czech locations, Dennis Gansel's German-language WWII drama Der Tiger is set in 1943 on the Eastern Front. The film follows the five-man crew of a Nazi tank sent on a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. Czech locations including Milovice, Řeporyje, Barrandov Studio, and the countryside around Lenešice doubled for war-torn battlefields.

After debuting in German cinemas last fall, Der Tiger is now streaming with English subtitles on Prime Video, bringing the Czech-shot production to international audiences worldwide.

František Vláčil’s striking historical drama The Valley of the Bees explores devotion, duty, and the harsh codes of the Teutonic Order in 13th-century Bohemia. A follow-up to the director's Marketa Lazarová, considered by some to be the best Czech movie ever made, the film was shot on location at Czech and Polish castles with meticulously designed costumes by Theodor Pištěk.

A newly-restored version of The Valley of the Bees will screen as part of the KVIFF Classics festival at Prague's Kino Světozor on Jan. 15. Look for the new restoration to hit additional cinemas and streaming services later this year.
