Due to the COVID crisis, a number of global marijuana marches were cancelled in April, the customary date for “4/20” events.

While Prague’s answer to this worldwide event advocating for the legalization of cannabis in the Czech lands typically happens in May, this year a September parade will cover a symbolic 4.20 km of the Czech capital.

September 5 sees the 23rd annual outing of the Million Marijuana March in Prague, a demonstration intended to highlight what organizers call the Czech Republic’s outdated and ineffective legislation which considers the cultivation and personal use of cannabis with a THC content above 0.3% a criminal offense.

“We will go to the city center with musical accompaniment to express our opposition to the criminalization of cannabis and its users in a non-violent but loud way,” Legalizace.cz writes on its web page.

The march kicks off at 13:00 at Karlovo náměstí with the parade route making detours through several destinations along Wenceslas Square and Old Town, and ends in Klárov.

According to city hall, some roads could be temporarily closed due to the event. “A movable occupation of roads is allowed, for the time necessary for the passage of the participants of the event and the passage of the accompanying cars,” says a spokesperson from mayor’s office.

The accompanying Greenfest will take place from September 4-5 on Střelecký Island and will feature construction workshops, lectures, film screenings, a hemp counseling center for Legalizace, an accompanying program for children, and musical acts.

A debate on the current Czech cannabis legislation will take place at Žofín Palace on Saturday at 16:30. Audience capacity is limited to 130 people due to the emergency measures in place to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus epidemic.

The number of visitors to the festival is limited to 1,000.

The Million Marijuana March began in 1999 and has since taken place in more than 485 different cities around the world, sometimes under local monikers like: World Cannabis Day, Cannabis Liberation Day, Global Space Odyssey, Ganja Day, J Day and more.

In May of this year The Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic put in motion a bill by Pirate Party Deputy, Tomáš Vymazal, that called for the regulation of measures for the cultivation and possession of cannabis for personal use.

However, Legalizace spokesperson Robert Veverka says: “The Pirate Party’s proposal, which would at least partially correct the outdated drug legislation, has been in the Chamber of Deputies for a very long time, and it is time for the legislators to finally comment on it.”

Protesters at Saturday’s event are being asked to wear to face masks and adhere to hygiene measures; find the full parade route on the Legalizace website.
