Prague Gets New 'Cyklobuses'

Travelling by bus in the Czech capital with a bicycle? It’s now possible as part of new pilot program

Travelling with a bicycle by public transportation in the Czech capital isn’t an uncommon sight; Prague metro riders have long been able to carry bikes in the first and last carriages.

Even some trams allow passengers to bring bikes, provided they are travelling in a certain direction (usually uphill, away from the city center) and not riding at peak hours between 14:00 and 19:00 on weekdays. This handy map from DPP details which trams you can bring your bike on.

But bikes on buses? It’s long been forbidden.

Until now. A new pilot program will be launched this Saturday, May 21, that will allow passengers to carry their bikes on the 147 bus line from Dejvická.

Just not inside the bus: attached to the back via a rack.

Passengers will be responsible for loading and unloading their own bicycles; once loaded, they will receive a badge with an ID number from the driver.

Because of the time involved, unloading bikes will only be allowed at the Internacionální and Výhledy stops.

The pilot program will run through October 2016. If successful, more cyclobuses are expected to be rolled out throughout the city.
