A 28-kilometer bicycle trail could be built around Václav Havel Airport in the next two years, reports Czech Television.

The path would link popular runway viewing points and, in the future, other cycling routes in the region.

The airport and surrounding communities hope the path will increase tourist interest in the area.

“The first phase of cycle paths should be a three-meters-wide paved surface, so it will serve not only for cyclists but in-line skaters,” a spokesperon for the airport said.

The new route would have five years to tap into the whole network of cycling routes, planned jointly with the airport and surrounding municipalities.

In addition, the trail will feature airplane viewing mounds near the villages of Kněževes and Hostivice, reflecting the recent popularity of the viewing terraces at the Prague airport where every day hundreds of plane spotters watch the runway.

Similar paths have sprung up around airports in Manchester, Munich, and Vienna.
