Lights Out, Prague! Czech Republic Set to Go Dark for an Hour This Saturday

The 11th annual Earth Hour encourages people worldwide to turn off the lights for an hour in recognition of the global impact of climate change

Sixty municipalities in the Czech Republic, including seven cities and more than a thousand households, are anticipated to join in the 11th annual Earth Hour a global campaign asking citizens of the world to switch off the lights on climate change.

Taking place the last Saturday of March every year, this year’s event falls on March 24, 2018, and begins at 20:30.

What started as symbolic lights-out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people and world monuments like the Egyptian pyramids in Giza, the statue of Christ the Savior in Brazil, and the Paris Eiffel Tower to black out for an hour.

Pavel Suchan, Chairman of the Expert Group on Light Pollution of the Czech Astronomical Society says of the event’s importance to the Czech Republic:

“We produce an electrical energy that we do not need, increasing the CO2 share, which we also do not need and, moreover, it hurts us, we are dazzled by light which invades our surroundings, instead of just lighting the roads and walkways.”

He adds that Earth Hour is a great opportunity to experience the nighttime atmosphere the way our ancestors once did.

Among the Prague monuments and landmarks that will go dark this Saturday are the State Opera, Municipal House, Old Town Square tower, Petrin, Powder Gate, Congress Center, New Town Hall, and Kampa Museum.
