Leaving Czechia? How to erase your legal footprint before you go

  • Residence permit: Know your departure date
  • Trade license: Cancelation date matters
  • Taxes: Leaving does not erase your obligations
  • Health insurance and social security: Settle the final balance
  • Czech bank account: Think twice before closing
  • Keep your Czech number, cancel your contracts

The visa process may have been the hardest part of settling into Czechia. Leaving is easier, but closing your Czech life comes with its own maze of deadlines, documents, and details that are easy to overlook.

The good news about the exit is that it's easier than the entrance. No trips to Dresden or Schengen exile need happen, nor interviews, bank statements, photos, or application fees.

But can you simply pack your bags and hop on a plane? No. If you have built a legal life here, there are still loose ends to tie up: closing a trade license, settling taxes, ending insurance, returning your residence card, and making sure money continues reaching you after you leave.
