The upcoming change to the law is aimed at foreigners from non-EU countries who apply for residence as family members of Czechs.

Foreigners married to Czech citizens, or raising children with one, could soon face a far more complicated path to residency under a proposed overhaul of Czechia's Act on the Residence of Foreigners. The bill is currently awaiting final approval in the Chamber of Deputies.

What would change

Under current rules, a non-EU national who is married to a Czech citizen or has a child with one can apply for family-based residence from inside the country, even if another permit, such as an employee card, expires in the meantime.

The new bill would remove that option for many applicants, instead requiring them to leave Czechia and wait abroad for a decision, a process that can take three to six months.
