What if there was a job that allowed you to apply without any formal qualifications, offered you the option to choose your own hours, required you to speak zero Czech, and gave you a chance to earn up to CZK 4,000 daily just for driving a car or riding a bicycle?

Okay, we admit it—working for Wolt isn’t a responsibility-free joyride, but the description outlined above is a reality for many. Expats.cz wanted to find out what it’s really like to work for one of the largest food delivery companies in Czechia, so we connected with a local courier named James.

The English-speaking expat served us his personal experience working for Wolt, describing how it empowers people to own their careers (and paychecks) as the gig economy continues to thrive.

A day in the life of a Wolt driver, on his terms

Originally from the UK, James has been delivering for Wolt for about three years now. He’s a dad, a longtime Prague resident, and fully committed to one thing: not being tied to anyone’s schedule but his own.

I usually start around 9 a.m., but honestly, it depends on my mood or schedule,” he explains. “Some days I kick off earlier, some later. That’s what I love about it.”

He uses his own car to drive for Wolt, which allows him to spend more valuable time with his child and family. He’s also able to take a holiday or break whenever he wants for up to three months—no approvals needed.

“Being able to set my own schedule and work whenever—so that I can take and collect my son from school, for example—is a huge benefit,” he adds. “There’s no boss, no micromanagement: it’s total freedom.”

James explains that getting started was extremely easy. “Everything was done online from home. I just had to send a picture of my ID.” Two weeks later, James could start work. He didn’t need any previous courier experience or knowledge of the Czech language to begin—big advantages for expats seeking work in a new country.

Work is always on offer, from flowers to fast food… or something a little spicier

The mornings are busy: James starts his day whizzing around different parts of Prague, but he never has to venture far away from home. There’s enough work to keep him busy around Jiřího z Poděbrad and Vinohrady, which are local to him, so his time and earnings are maximized.

Wolt’s access to a large variety of stores in Prague means there’s always money to make. Every day’s a mixed bag in terms of what customers seek from the convenience of their homes, and a typical shift can include picking up food from McDonald’s in Prague 3, delivering a bouquet of roses from a florist, and grabbing supplies for furry friends from Pet Center Flora.

One of the biggest surprises James has experienced is that no customer desire is off-limits. “I once even picked up an order from Erotic City!” the Wolt driver admits.

Yes, you can earn a living wage—and some generous bonuses, too

Flexibility and no dull moments are nice, but James knows firsthand that there’s a lot of money to be made, too. The courier tells us he earns between CZK 45,000 to CZK 50,000 monthly and works five days per week. Not bad for a job that lets you listen to podcasts all day.

You might think, “He must be driving all day long to earn that much,” but James says his working hours are also reasonable. Usually, he only has to work between six and seven hours per shift, sometimes earning over CZK 4,000 for one day’s work.

“There are days and periods where you can earn a lot more per order, like when it’s very rainy or occasions like Valentine’s Day,” he adds.

He’ll see his pay suddenly increase as he’s driving around Prague, which is another big perk of the job. According to his experience, Wolt gives generous bonuses and higher pay rates to its workers so they can earn extra cash: average bonuses are around 20 percent.

“If you make more than 450 orders in one month, you get upgraded to Gold Tier, and then get an extra CZK 1,000 per every 100 orders. That works out very nicely,” James also tells us.

When it comes to courier perks, Wolt delivers

Additional benefits are in abundance when working as a courier for Wolt. You can earn a generous CZK 5,000 if you refer just one person to join the ranks. There are also discounts and special offers with fast-food chain Pizza Hut, mobile service provider Vodafone, and e-scooter provider Scootreon.

“You can also save good money on fuel from Shell,” James adds, a huge perk if using a vehicle to deliver goods around town.

While on his delivery route, James dons some of the free Wolt merchandise (a t-shirt, jacket, cap, and thermo delivery bag) given to workers upon joining. He also uses a free heating mat for the food, all of which helps him reach Gold Tier, to get the most benefits.

Couriers looking to improve their earnings while reducing environmental impact can also rent Wolt-branded e-bikes through the Better Cities Program.

Between having total flexibility and control over his workday and earning good money, James has made a full-time job out of working for Wolt. He recommends it to anyone and everyone, not just expats, but also for those looking to earn extra cash on the side. Whether you’re looking for a part-time gig or searching for a full-time job that doesn’t suck the soul out of your day, Wolt might be your ticket.
