Czechia’s hopes of defending their world title ended Thursday with a 5-2 quarterfinal defeat to Sweden at the 2025 IIHF World Championship in Stockholm.
The Swedes, seeking redemption after last year’s 7-3 semifinal loss to the Czechs, dominated early and never looked back. Powered by a commanding first period, in which they outscored the Czechs 3-0, the host team secured a spot in Saturday’s semifinal against the U.S.
Czech goaltender Daniel Vladař faced sustained pressure, making several key saves, but couldn’t prevent Sweden’s early surge. The loss marks the second time in three years the Czech Republic has exited in the quarterfinal stage.
“We overslept at the start,” Czech forward David Pastrňák said. “That first period cost us the game.”
Coach Radim Rulík acknowledged the team struggled with Sweden’s pace early. “The first period was not successful for us,” he said. “But the guys didn’t give up and left everything on the ice.”

Czech captain Roman Červenka expressed disappointment but highlighted the value of the experience for younger players. “You have to be a part of wins and losses, and all that gives you experience,” he said. “I believe there is still something to build on.”
Sweden, bolstered by a roster stacked with NHL talent, is seeking to improve on last year’s bronze medal. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic will look to regroup after a tournament that started with promise but ended in frustration.
Switzerland and Denmark will contest the other semi-final. The final will be played on May 25.
“This time it didn’t work out,” Pastrňák said. “But we’re building a great team, and I believe a bright future awaits us.”
Czechia has won seven world championships in total.
