Czech Republic Sees Record Number of Tourists in 2015

27.8 million foreign visitors flocked to the country last year, a new record number

27.8 million foreign tourists visited the Czech Republic in 2015, an eight percent increase from the previous year as the country sets another record for number of international visitors. Tourism to the Czech Republic has increased in each of the past four years.

Data released by CzechTourism and reported by iDnes.cz reveals that more than half of those tourists – 14.4 million – arrived in the country for only one day. Each tourist spends an average of 2,769 CZK daily.

Despite a sharp decline in the number of tourists from Russia, an increase in the number of visitors from the US and Asian countries helped pick up the slack.

Germans accounted for the majority of the one-day visitors, at 60%, followed by Slovaks, Austrians and Poles. The majority of day trippers visited the country for shopping, according to iDnes.cz, while 2.4 million visitors used the Czech Republic as a transit country.

Sporting events in the country were credited with the dramatic rise is tourist figures. Last year, the Czech Republic was host to the Ice Hockey World Championships as well as football’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

Revenue from tourism amounted to 238 billion CZK in 2014, nearly 3% of the GDP, according to data recently released by the Czech Statistical Office.

That figure that should rise in 2015 numbers.
