Health Ministry launches online booster registration for fourth dose

It has been possible to get it from the general practitioner or at facilities with no previous registration. As of today, it is possible to register in advance.

Together with this, the Health Ministry presented a new campaign to promote vaccination. The new slogan for the Czech Health Ministry's Covid vaccination campaign will be "We get vaccinated for life without fear" with the subtitle "Health favors the prepared," ministry representatives told the press today. The new campaign is to enter social media in the summer, while mass media will introduce it in late September.

Over 38 percent of people in Czechia would like to get the fourth Covid vaccine dose and one-fifth are undecided, according to the ministry. "Vaccination will probably have to repeat as long as the virus is present among us," Health Minister Vlastimil Válek said. "We are prepared for the autumn wave that shall definitely come. Probably a little bit later than we expected," the minister added.

He repeated that the ministry would definitely not implement any drastic Covid measures. "They only brought huge economic losses," he explained. The ministry said the second part of the campaign would be launched flexibly as we do not know when the new Covid wave will start or when new vaccines will be available.

New Covid variant confirmed in Czechia

Czechia has seen the first case of a new coronavirus subvariant BA.2.76, which is closely related to the BA.2.75 subvariant, also called Centaur, and a previous coronavirus infection probably does not protect against it, the National Institute of Public Health (SZÚ) said. The Centaur subvariant has not yet been confirmed in the Czech Republic. Currently, 96 percent of the positive tests are made up of the more infectious subvariants of the Omicron , BA.5 and BA.4.

"The BA.2.76 subvariant as well as the Centaur subvariant marked BA.2.75, belong to a group of mutations that we think should be monitored. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has already listed Centaur as a variant of interest," Helena Jiřincová, head of the National Reference Laboratory for Flu and Non-Flu Diseases of the SZÚ, said.

The accessible foreign data show that the BA.2.76 subvariant is resistant to antibodies gained by the previous Covid disease. Jiřincová noted that not even the immunity gained from the Omicron infection, especially BA.1 variant, is sufficiently effective either.

Revaccination to start in Czechia next week

Revaccination against Covid with another booster dose will start in Czechia as of next week, following approval by the State Drug Control Institute (SÚKL) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA), Health Minister Vlastimil Válek said. The first places to start applying the vaccine would be the vaccination points where the patients do not have to register in advance. Furthermore, general practitioners may start ordering vaccines and offering revaccination.

A system of reservations for slots at other vaccination points should start operating in late August, Válek said. According to information on the ministry's website, 356 vaccination points currently operate in Czechia. Out of them, 56, mostly in hospitals, do not require a previous booking of a vaccine slot by the applicants.

He wants to make vaccination possible for those, who travel to risk destinations, are elderly or are afraid, or come from a region with a higher coronavirus incidence rate, typically Prague. He said, nevertheless that there would be no mistake on the part of those who would put off their revaccination closer to the autumn months. Válek said the revaccination is recommended for people over 60 and adults with other chronic diseases.

ÚZIS director: Summer wave will soon reach its peak

The summer Covid wave is reaching its peak. It will accelerate over the next week to 10 days followed by a gradual drop. Numbers may still remain rather high, the Institute for Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS) director Ladislav Dušek told Czech Radio. In the past three days, the daily numbers of new confirmed infections were around 2,000. Dušek stated that the real numbers of infected people may be up to five times higher. He says that despite the rapid start of the current wave at the beginning of June, the drop will be rather slow. It does not have to drop to the low numbers detected in May when there were only a few hundred cases per day. Currently, the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of Omicron now make up more than 89 percent of cases in Czechia.

In the fall, experts expect the health impacts of the next wave to be more severe, and a new variant is expected to previal. The Health Ministry wants to launch the possibility of getting a second booster against Covid at the beginning of August. People who have already been vaccinated three times should get a booster in September or October so that they have the highest protection for the following winter months. Revaccination is especially important for people over 80 and chronically ill people over 60.

Health Ministry plans vaccination campaign

The Czech Health Ministry is to choose the firm to prepare a strategy and media space for a campaign to promote further Covid-19 vaccination after Aug. 12 only when the deadline for submitting bids in this public tender expires, the ministry has announced. The contract value is put at CZK 8 million without VAT for the strategy preparation and its implementation and CZK 30 million are to be spent on media space purchases.

Currently, the ministry is selecting a firm to prepare the basic draft of communication tools, including an analysis of target groups and strategies as well as visual advertisements, commercial texts, and content for social media, along with recommendations of financial means for particular campaign parts.

The vaccination campaign is expected to help change the behavior of inhabitants of the Czech Republic, resulting in an increased application of vaccines against Covid, the ministry writes in its documentation on the public contract. The aim is to increase the interest in the first vaccination by 5 percent. In the case of the first re-vaccination, the aim is to raise it by 20 percent.

Summer Coivd wave increasing, may reach 20,000 cases per day

The coronavirus epidemic has accelerated significantly in the Czech Republic in the past week. Labs detected 5,680 new cases, some 2,400 more than last week. Over 1,000 cases have been added each weekday so far this week. The last time that happened was in early May. The number of hospitalized patients increased by about a third in a week to almost 200 patients. However, the number of people in serious condition is not significantly increasing, on Thursday there were seven of them in hospitals.

Institute of Health Information and Statistics (ÚZIS) director Ladislav Dušek said that only people with more serious symptoms are currently being tested, and there are actually many more infected people.

Health Minister Vlastimil Válek expects that the current increase may peak below 20,000 cases per day in the second half of July, he told Czech Radio (ČRo) on Thursday. He added that the wave began a little later than expected. According to the National Institute of Public Health (SZÚ), the current increase is due to the more contagious BA.4 or BA.5 subvariants of Omicron. According to findings so far, they do not have a worse course of the disease, but they are more than 10 times more contagious than the original version.

According to Dušek, vaccination or recovery from Covid is less effective against becoming infected with the BA.5 subvariant, but vaccines continue to work against death or the need for hospitalization with a serious course. That is why the Ministry of Health recommends people over 65 and chronically ill get revaccinated before autumn.

Last mask rules could end today

Update (May 4, 8:30): the lower house failed to reach this item on the agenda as planned.

The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech parliament, is expected to end the pandemic state of alert today. In addition, it will be the end of the mandatory use of respirators. Currently, it is still necessary to wear them in medical facilities, including pharmacies. The state of emergency due to the refugee crisis, however, would remain in effect. Deputy Health Minister Josef Pavlovic said that if the Chamber of Deputies manages to discuss everything, the alert should expire on the same day. From Wednesday, respirators should no longer be mandatory for ordinary citizens anywhere.

Ending the pandemic alert was proposed last week by Health Minister Vlastimil Válek and the government has already agreed to it. According to Válek, current Covid data show that it is not necessary to maintain the alert any longer. "When I took over as head of the ministry, I promised that we would only take and maintain measures if they made sense. The current numbers of those infected and hospitalized with Covid look more and more favorable," Válek said.

State Audit Office: Babiš's government mishandled pandemic IT

A report by the State Audit Office (NKÚ) criticized the chaotic implementation of IT systems to fight the Covid pandemic during the government of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The NKÚ said that the Heath Ministry knew since 2017 that Regional Hygiene Stations were lacking workstations and laptops, and had no coordinated communication system. A system was supposed to have been developed by 2019 but was postponed.

Smart Quarantine, which became a new information support service for managing the epidemic and for which the ministry spent CZK 387 million, was burdened during its development by a high degree of improvisation, the NKÚ stated in a press release. Positive antigen test, symptoms newly proof of Covid infection

A positive Covid-19 antigen test will be evidence that a person with symptoms has been infected with coronavirus. The Health Ministry has canceled the requirement to confirm a positive result of an antigen test by a PCR test. The confirmation had been obligatory since March 2021. The change is based on a European Commission regulation issued in February that recognizes a positive result of an antigen test as a document showing that a person with Covid symptoms caught the disease. The ministry said the testing kit must be one of those whose use in the EU has been approved.

Commuters no longer need to prove infectivity for travel to Austria, tourists still do

Those who regularly commute to Austria for work, study, or family do not have to prove infectivity from today, which means proof of vaccination against Covid, illness in the last six months, or a negative PCR test. These rules, referred to as 3G, remain in place for tourists, the Czech Foreign Ministry said today on Twitter. While the border between the two countries is freely passable for normal traffic, the ministry warned on its website that passengers might encounter random checks directly at the borders and in the Austrian interior. Those checked who do not have one of the three required proofs of infectivity, must take a test in Austria and remain in quarantine until a negative result is confirmed. They must also register in advance. Austria has abolished the obligation to show proof of vaccination, illness, or test when using services such as restaurants from March 5 with the exception of Vienna.

People who underwent Covid complain that they saw before and now “do not see,” Václav Antonín, chairman of the board of the Association of Czech Opticians and Optometrists told ČTK. People complain of blurred vision, headaches, tearing, or dry eyes. “If the covid attacks the nervous system, it also attacks vision," Antonín said. According to him, people who work intensively with a computer all day and need to concentrate a lot are most often confronted with problems. Covid not only affected people's eyesight, but also because a large number of people began to use computer or tablet monitors more intensively, both at work and at school, and at entertainment, and had more tired eyes than before.

Respirators no longer required on public transport as of Thursday

"In Japan, face masks have never been mandated, yet every intelligent Japanese person wears a mask whenever there is a threatening risk of getting infected," he added. "The National Institute for Pandemic Management has agreed on this, though not fully unanimously," he added.

"We can afford this since the Covid incidence is declining in our country. The situation in hospitals continues to gradually improve, but above all, the number of positive tests has been falling," Válek noted.

The Health Minister also said he would like to lift the requirement to wear a mask in health and social care facilities at the end of April or beginning of May. "We are still waiting, as the situation is not yet fully ideal [...] We will see how it will develop," he added.

New, more contagious Covid variant detected

The National Public Health Institute (SZÚ) on Thursday confirmed the presence of the XE variant of coronavirus in the Czech Republic. XE, a combination of the Omicron variants BA.1 and BA.2, is 10 percent more contagious than the original Omicron. The recombinant virus was confirmed by whole-genome sequencing. “Recombinant variants arise when one person becomes infected with two or more variants of the virus at the same time. This transmits and mixes genetic information between variants of the virus in the host body. During the pandemic, such mutations have occurred several times, it is basically not unusual,” National Reference Laboratory head Helena Jiřincová. The positive sample came from a woman in Prague.

The SZÚ says there is not enough information to assess whether XE can become a new dominant strain. Clinical practice also does not yet report that XE has any more serious symptoms for the patient. The XE variant has also been detected in Britain, the U.S., and Ireland. According to the current National Reference Laboratory report, omicron BA.2 is still the dominant variant in the Czech Republic. Delta is practically non-existent.

"It's going to get warm after the weekend and as soon as I get the (Covid-spread) data for Monday and Tuesday, I don't see why respirators should be still mandatory in public transport," Válek said.

According to experts, the spread of respiratory infections is generally connected with the weather, with the virus being more transmitted from autumn until spring because people tend to spend more time outdoors.
