Czech Philharmonic to perform a concert for Notre Dame at Rudolfinum (update)

Proceeds from the voluntary admission to Tuesday's concert will go toward the restoration of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris

UPDATE: Following the publication of this article, the Czech Philharmonic announced a change to the venue of the concert for Notre Dame. The concert will still take place this evening but has been moved from St. Vitus Cathedral to Prague’s Rudolfinum (Dvořák Hall). More details can be found here.

In an effort to support the restoration of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, the Czech Philharmonic has announced that it will perform Antonín Dvořák’s elegiac “Stabat Mater” in St. Vitus Cathedral on Tuesday.

Four other Prague orchestras headed by the Czech Philharmonic as well as the National Theater collective ensembles will perform at the April 23 benefit concert under the baton of Tomáš Netopil, the main guest conductor of the Czech Philharmonic.

Speaking to Aktualne.cz, David Mareček, CEO of Czech Philharmonic, said: “On Monday, while watching the footage of the burning Notre Dame Cathedral, we felt a deep emotion and a need to support France in restoring one of Europe’s most important spiritual buildings.”

The concert for Notre-Dame will take place next Tuesday, April 23 at 9:10 pm, and will be broadcast live from St. Vitus Cathedral, itself a Gothic masterpiece, by CT art and the Czech Radio Vltava station.

Admission to the concert is voluntary, with all proceeds going to the restoration of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.

On Monday evening a massive fire broke out at the landmark Parisian church, destroying its iconic spire and 13th-century wooden roof.

“Stabat Mater” premiered in 1880. It is based on a medieval religious sequence and is said to have been inspired by the death of the composer’s three children.
