Olympic Champion Bolt to Run One of His Final Career Races In Ostrava

This will be the ninth time the Jamaican sprint legend has appeared at the Golden Spike—more than any other race of his career

The Czech city of Ostrava will welcome Olympic champion Usain Bolt, considered to be the greatest sprinter of all time, to its Golden Spike (Zlatá tretra) meet this summer.

Organizers of the event recently announced that Bolt is slated to run the 100m on June 28. It will be the 30-year-olds Jamaican’s ninth appearance at the Golden Spike, part of the IAAF World Challenge series and part of the runner’s preparation for the August World Championships in London.

Bolt said of his return to Ostrava:

“The Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava is always one of the first meetings I put in my diary each year and I am happy to announce that I will be competing there for the ninth and final time…this year.”

Bolt enhanced his already legendary Olympic status with an unprecedented third consecutive 100m, 200m, and 4x100m triple at Rio 2016; he is the holder of the world records at all three distances and an 11-time world champion.

“I think [the Golden Spike] was the first professional track meet that invited me to run back at the start of my career and it is fitting that I should return there in my final season,” Bolt said.

The appearance makes the Golden Spike the meet Bolt has competed in most frequently in his career.

Bolt does not plan to run the 200m in Ostrava, say organizers.

Also confirmed to appear at the Golden Spike are Olympians Mo Farah, Wayde Van Niekerk, Christian Taylor, Thomas Rohler, Anita Wlodarczyková, David Rudisha, Conseslus Kipruto.
