The Prague Feed: Summer 2015

While everyone else is eating hot dogs, Prague’s French Canadian expat population is lining up for a taste of Montreal in Karlín where the newly opened Garage True Canadian Deli is serving the citys’s first poutine—a hot mess of french fries, gravy, and cheese curds. 

And since all foodie roads (and fixed-gear bikes) lead to Karlín these days, check out the new neighborhood barbecue joint Nejen Bistro, which is sending out burgers and steaks hot off its Josper grill.

In addition to its two other locations and food truck, the Las Adelitas Tex-Mex restaurant empire is growing. A third branch has just opened on Lucemburská in Prague 3.

Does Prague need another pho joint? If the good buzz surrounding Phở u Letné means anything then, yes, absolutely! While long waits and ulitities issues are being sorted out, the Vietnamese-Thai mix menu is reportedly solid.

Speaking of Thai fusion, Edamame in Vršovice is mixing up Thai classics with creative sushi rolls to yummy effect. Also new to the area, Wasabi Sushi on Kodaňská which is currently offering sushi burger (!) sets.

There are two new spots on the brunch beat: Open-air brunch at Prague Beach (the next one on August 8 is Spanish-themed and vacation-flavored) while the new Žižkov waffle counter Kafle has both sweet and savory versions.

Prague’s lively riverbanks are the epicenter of summer food activity, although a report from Lidovky.cz says that authorities are cracking down on“pirate boats” selling contraband booze on Náplavka. A newly opened (legit) pop-up bar under Vyšehrad is devoted exclusively to Italian aperitifs.

Vegetarians continue to eat well in Prague with a trio of very veggie options opening recently: Raw Deli (new Narodni 25 location), Veggie Garden, and Zoe Café which is serving, just in time for summer, a raw ice cream bar and its own cold-brewed coffee.

Magazine-spread worthy cafes are becoming commonplace in Prague but newly opened bistro and bakery Café Záhorský is particularly fetching and its light meals and ice-cream-filled fruit sundaes are the perfect anecdotes to the heatwave. Also new to the ‘hood, a Doublshot cafe. Is Dejvice the new Karlín?

The line-up of summer food fests, including first-time ice cream and bbq fests, is too extensive to list here, see the highlights in our article Super Summer Food Fests. One not mentioned there that just came across our radar is Prague’s first-ever honey fesitvaltaking place in September.

Every Tuesday throughout the summer, the new art gallery/multi-purpose space Černá labuť Art & Event Gallery, located on the eighth floor of this historic shopping center, is offering grill fare, drinks, music, and a unique rooftop view of Prague from 10:00-22:00.
