Skip the Queues: Prague National Museum Exhibit Goes On-Line

Prague’s National Museum has been seeing record lines of visitors since re-opening, but you can catch its exhibits online for free

Prague’s National Museum has been seeing record lines of visitors, both tourists and locals eager to get into its newly renovated Historical Building of National Museum, now offering free admission through the end of the year.

After several years of repairs, the National Museum re-opened on October 28, 2018 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Czechoslovak state.

The current exhibit, Czech-Slovak/Slovak-Czech Exhibition 2018, in cooperation with the Slovak National Museum, highlights numerous topics, celebrating everything from sports, to daily life at the dawn of the First Republic.

Since its opening, some visitors are reporting up to hour-long waits, particularly on the weekends, sharing shots of queues stretching up to 100 meters via social media.

A tip for those who want to avoid sore feet and long waits (or anyone who isn’t currently in the Czech Republic and would like to see the exhibit): Google Arts and Culture now features an interactive “exhibit” that lets you explore a number of things related to the Czechoslovak century including prints, photos, artifacts, fashion, and more.

Says Google’s Arts and Culture Director Liudmila Kobyakova: “We are very pleased to be able to make online access to the 100th anniversary of Czechoslovakia selected artifacts from the collections of the National Museum.”

The online exhibition is divided into several sections, such as The Birth of Czechoslovakia, Leisure Time, Sport, and Faith in the Age of Czechoslovakia. Artifacts available as part of a virtual tour include Emil Zátopek’s track spikes, the first Gold Medal for a Czechoslovak racer from 1924, the chronicle of the Hebron tramp village, and the Golden Rose from Velehrad.
