Rare English-Subtitled Screening of Hit Polish Film Comes to Prague Cinema

A screening of Jan P. Matuszynski’s acclaimed “The Last Family” will be accompanied by an evening of Polish food and festive music

Polish culture in the Czech Republic has gotten a bit more visibility of late, thanks to the Bardzo fajný collective, a group whose aim is to popularize Polish culture in Prague and throughout the Czech Republic.

Begun with a successful HitHit campaign in 2013, the group organizes popular Polish-themed evenings and events with a particular focus on Polish film and culture.

For the spring edition of the event, taking place tomorrow evening at Bio Oko, fans of Polish film will be treated to a screening of The Last Family, a film which chronicles the familial struggles of painter Zdzisław Beksiński, the best-known 20th-century artist in Poland.

The film depicts the rise of Beksiński, a family man determined to do right by his wife Zofia, neurotic son Tomasz and the couple’s aging mothers. His daily painting efforts eventually pay off and he makes a name for himself in contemporary art, though not without some dramatic highs and lows, all obsessively captured by the artist on videocamera.

Jan P. Matuszynski’s directorial debut has won numerous awards in Poland and at festivals worldwide.

The evening begins with a spread of Polish delicacies and the sounds of DJ Kohl, who will spin the greatest hits of the 1970s and 1980s, the era during which the film takes place.

The screening, presented by Aerofilms and the Polish Institute in Prague will start at 20:30.
