A Welsh mother-daughter team known for crisscrossing the globe in pursuit of the perfect pastry has named Prague’s Artic Bakehouse one of their five favorite spots. Jessica Morgan-Helliwell, 26, and her mother, Louise Church, 48, have spent the past two years documenting their travels to artisan bakeries around the world.

While their journeys have taken them from London to Marrakesh and as far as Australia, it was the cherry bomb pastry at Artic Bakehouse that left a lasting impression. Their verdict places the Prague spot alongside four others from their top-tier list from the UK to Australia.

Pastry tourism with a personal twist

Morgan-Helliwell and Church describe themselves as “bakery tourists”—travelers whose destinations revolve around the search for unique and high-quality baked goods.

What started as a shared love for pastries has evolved into a dedicated travel project. The duo aims to visit at least one new artisan bakery each weekend, whether at home in South Wales or abroad, often selecting cities based on social media leads.

“We’ve just got back from Prague, and social media was a big part of looking into where to go," Morgan-Helliwell told SWNS.

“We’ve been doing social media content creating for about two years now, and going to all the local restaurants. We found that we were always looking for new places to go, so we thought we’d start documenting it ourselves."

Their Instagram account @loveeatdrinktravel features pastries ranging from a pistachio croissant with white chocolate in Narberth to an almond croissant cookie in Brisbane. But their all-time favorite remains the seasonal hot cross bun croissant at Swansea’s Little Valley Bakery—just eight miles from their home.

Despite the delicious destinations, both women agree the best part of their project is spending quality time together.

“It’s a great way of bonding and spending time together—it definitely brings us closer together," Church said of the duo's travels. “Having that shared interest is really lovely, and we get to explore lovely places along the way—and eat some really good food.”

The bakery tourists' top 5 treats

  • Little Valley Bakery (Swansea) – hot cross bun croissant
  • Rock N Dough (Narberth) – pistachio and white chocolate croissant
  • Brooki (Brisbane) – almond croissant cookie
  • Monty’s (Neath) – traditional almond croissant
  • Artic Bakehouse (Prague) – cherry bomb pastry

Artic Bakehouse: Nordic roots, Prague success

What set Artic Bakehouse apart is its balance of innovation and tradition. The bakery’s standout item, according to the duo, was the cherry bomb, which features a marzipan filling with a tart cherry profile, encased in a flaky, golden pastry.

Founded by Icelandic baker David Arnorsson, Artic Bakehouse specializes in sourdough-based bread and pastries. Arnorsson, who learned his craft in his father’s bakery, brings 25 years of experience and a commitment to traditional techniques.

His goal: to share Icelandic baking culture with Prague through the comforting scent of fresh-baked bread.

With six locations across Prague—including in Old Town, New Town, Malá Strana, Smíchov, and Vinohrady—the bakery has quickly become a local favorite and now enjoys international recognition thanks to its new fans from Wales.
