More than 3,000 novice drivers in Czechia have violated the conditions of the country’s probationary driving system since its introduction in 2024, the Czech Ministry of Transport reports, highlighting rules that any new drivers should understand.

The system applies for the first two years after obtaining a Czech driving license, and although it is designed as a “second chance” framework, breaking the rules can quickly become costly and time-consuming, reports Czech Television.

What is the probationary driving period?

Under Czech law, new drivers enter a two-year probation period immediately after passing their driving test. The same rules also apply retroactively to those who received their licenses shortly before the system came into force in early 2024.

During this time, committing a serious traffic offense does not automatically mean losing your license, but it does trigger mandatory corrective measures.
