Netflix Comes to Czech Republic

The streaming TV service should hit ČR by next year

Netflix is finally coming to the Czech Republic, the company’s Head of Communications Cliff Edwards told Hospodářské noviny on Monday morning. The streaming TV service plans to begin offering its services locally “no later than next year.”

After starting as a US DVD-by-mail service in the late 1990s, Netflix expanded along with technology to become the country’s leading streaming service. Today, Netflix counts over 50 million subscribers in 40 countries across the globe. International success in countries from Argentina to Finland has paved the way for the entry into the Czech market.

While rights issues will determine the content available, in the US the company boasts over 100,000 titles that include a wide range of movies and TV shows. 

Netflix offerings include not only licensed film and television programming, but also their own original productions. The 2013 Netflix-produced documentary The Square was nominated for an Academy Award, and their original series House of Cards, starring Kevin Spacey, has received 20 Emmy nominations over the past two years. 

In a country where online piracy has become the norm as viewers scramble for access to movies and TV shows, the addition of Netflix to the landscape could be a game-changer.
