A Czech factory supplying a German carmaker, a household investing in American shares and a government planning defense spending have something in common: decisions in Washington can affect their finances, even when they have no say in who makes them.

Americans vote Nov. 3 in congressional midterm elections that will determine the balance of power during the final two years of Donald Trump’s presidency. Democrats are favored to regain the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate remains competitive, according to Reuters’ latest assessment. Neither outcome would remove Trump from office.

For Czechia, the significance lies in how a different Congress might constrain the president, or reinforce his political position. Trade, support for Ukraine and financial uncertainty are the main connections to watch, although an electoral setback for Trump would not automatically reverse his policies.

The stakes for Czech jobs and European security
