Prague music fans will get a rare chance to see 1980s pop icons Duran Duran live when the band performs at the O2 Arena on June 24. This marks their first Czech concert in 14 years. Tickets, priced from CZK 1,500, go on sale Feb. 23 through Ticketmaster and Ticketportal, organizers Live Nation announced.
The British band, known for hits like Hungry Like the Wolf and Rio, helped define MTV-era pop with cinematic music videos and catchy synth-driven songs. Their return to Prague recalls a series of past performances, including a December 1988 concert during Czechoslovakia’s communist era.
Duran Duran has sold over 100 million records worldwide, won two Grammy Awards, and been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Core members Simon Le Bon and Nick Rhodes have remained with the group since its formation, joined by founding members Roger Taylor and John Taylor in the early 2000s.
A history with Prague
The band first visited Prague in 1988, performing in Sportovní hala. At the time, Czechoslovak Television praised their "intelligent, melodic, and well-executed music, complemented by lighting and choreography."
They returned for concerts in 2005 and 2012 at O2 Arena, playing largely 1980s hits for audiences of around 4,000. During their last Prague concert, Duran Duran opened with Before the Rain, featuring documentary footage of Russia’s Bolshevik revolution.
Lead singer Simon Le Bon was joined by backing vocalist Anna Ross on several songs at their Prague show in 2012, and the band closed the show with a mash-up of Wild Boys and Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, followed by encores of Girls on Film and Rio.
Global reach and legacy
Named after a character from the film Barbarella, Duran Duran released their debut album in 1981, the same year MTV launched. The channel helped the band’s early hits gain international fame.
In the 1980s, they consistently topped British and U.S. charts with tracks like Is There Something I Should Know? and Union of the Snake, including the James Bond theme A View to a Kill.
The band continues to tour extensively, with hundreds of performances worldwide each year. Their music has inspired cover versions from artists such as Muse (Hungry Like the Wolf) and Deftones (The Chauffeur), keeping Duran Duran relevant across generations.
