A driver who allegedly forced a mother to stop on the D6 highway and attacked her in front of her 8-year-old daughter is suspected of three criminal offenses, Central Bohemian police said Thursday.
The confrontation began at roadworks near Jesenice in the Rakovník district, where the woman was observing temporary speed limits. Police say the driver of a black SUV became aggressive, brake-checked her and stopped in front of her car before approaching and assaulting her.
Her daughter helped preserve a key piece of evidence: the dashcam recording. When the man allegedly tried to take the device, the girl hid it beneath her seat.
From tailgating to an attack inside the car
The woman was driving through a construction zone where speed limits changed from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour and then back to 50, according to the police account.
She later told television reporters that the SUV followed closely behind, sounding its horn and flashing its headlights. She feared it would hit her vehicle.
After leaving the restricted section, she moved into the right lane. The SUV driver then pulled alongside, overtook her and braked sharply in front of her, forcing her to stop.
The man approached her car, struck the window and opened the unlocked driver’s door, according to reporting by TV Nova. Police say he repeatedly hit the woman on the head and body.
Speaking to CNN Prima NEWS, she acknowledged making an obscene gesture before the physical attack. She said she defended herself and told the man that his actions were being recorded.
He then allegedly struck the camera and reached for it. The woman urged her daughter to move it out of reach, and the child concealed it under the passenger seat.
Driver called police, but footage challenged his account
The confrontation ended when other motorists began stopping nearby, according to the woman’s account reported by TV Nova.
The SUV driver subsequently called police himself, alleging that the woman had brake-checked him while passing through the roadworks. Police spokeswoman Vlasta Suchánková told the broadcaster that the recording instead showed her driving steadily and observing the restrictions.
Police have formally notified the man that he is suspected of attempted bodily harm, disorderly conduct and attempted theft. The attempted-theft allegation concerns his alleged effort to take the dashcam.
Suchánková said he could face up to three years in prison. The case is being handled through expedited pretrial proceedings; any finding of guilt or sentence would be for a court to decide.
Police said the woman was experiencing shock and fear of driving after the assault.
In her television interview, she also said she discovered afterward that her car’s automatic door-locking function had not been enabled. She has since switched it on.
