Czechs raise CZK 47 million for Nepal after devastating floods: How you can help

Czech humanitarian organizations have raised more than CZK 47 million to help people affected by devastating floods in Nepal, with donations continuing to climb as rescue and relief efforts enter their third week.

Around CZK 47.3 million has been collected through Czech fundraising campaigns so far, an increase of approximately CZK 10.8 million over the past two weeks, humanitarian organizations told ČTK Wednesday.

The money is supporting everything from food, clean water and medical care to psychological assistance for survivors, cholera vaccinations and efforts to improve early warning systems.

People in Need has received by far the largest share of Czech donations, raising CZK 41.2 million from the public. The Prague-based humanitarian organization is working in some of the hardest-hit areas and has sent a 14-member rescue team to Nepal. You can donate to People in Need at this link.

Alongside immediate assistance, its teams are providing psychosocial support to people affected by the disaster and working with local authorities to strengthen warning systems for future natural disasters.

UNICEF's Czech fundraising campaign has collected another CZK 2.5 million. Its international response includes providing safe water and sanitation, medical care, nutrition, educational supplies and psychological support, with a particular focus on protecting children. Czech humanitarian organization ADRA has raised around CZK 1.9 million and is distributing basic necessities. With the floods increasing the risk of disease outbreaks, the organization has also become involved in distributing cholera vaccines. Find ADRA's fundraising campaign here.

Caritas has collected CZK 1.1 million to support its partner Caritas Nepal, which is assessing local needs and distributing assistance to people who have lost their homes. Donate to Nepal through Caritas at this link.

CARE has raised another CZK 357,000 and plans to reach around 15,000 people in the hardest-hit areas during the first two months of its response. The Czech Red Cross has collected more than CZK 250,000, which will support the wider international Red Cross and Red Crescent relief effort. Find CARE's campaign here.

The floods struck Nepal in late August, leaving a catastrophic toll across affected communities. According to local authorities cited by ČTK, at least 1,400 people have died and around 5,170 remain missing.

The Czech Geological Survey has linked the disaster to a rockslide triggered by the collapse of part of a Himalayan glacier.

Czech fundraising efforts are continuing as humanitarian groups move from the initial emergency response toward longer-term assistance.

Additional funds will come from a charity art auction organized through the Artslimit platform by the Happy Hearts Czech Foundation, which is backed by Czech models Petra Němcová and Karolína Bosáková.

Works offered in the auction include a vase by the late Czech artist Milan Knížák, a sculpture by Břetislav Benda and paintings by several contemporary artists.

The CZK 47.3 million raised so far highlights the scale of the Czech public response, with organizations continuing to accept donations as Nepal faces the longer-term challenge of recovering from one of the country's most destructive natural disasters.
