Czech company SENS is calling their newly developed protein bars the most innovative yet; innovative, yes, as for edible that remains to be seen: the bars are made from crickets.

Available in dark chocolate and sesame and peanut butter and cinnamon, the insect-infused creations are referred to by the company as “the world’s only natural protein bar with 20g of complete protein inside.”

The gourmet flavors were developed by a Czech chef who specializes in insect cuisine; an energy bar (dark chocolate and orange and pineapple coconut) is also in the works.

The bars are gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free and do not use any preservatives, additives, nor added sugar. The crickets are incorporated via a flour made from dried crickets.

Early tasters are enthusiastic and the entomophagy-obsessed duo behind the project say that the cricket flour is virtually tasteless.

SENS is currently in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign which has already raised funds well beyond its initial 10,000 EUR goal to support the production and distribution of the product by the holidays.

According to its website, roughly 2 billion people eat insects as part of their traditional diets. The project also aims to educate the Western world on the benefits of eating insects. “They are healthy, sustainable and a humane source of the best quality nutrients.”
