Foreigners waiting for Czech residency and work permits can face months of uncertainty, with some applications taking significantly longer than the Interior Ministry's stated processing deadlines.

“I really can’t keep waiting,” says one unhappy applicant for a Czech Employee Card. “I want to work, but I can’t start. I feel completely lost, and this situation has had a devastating impact on my mental health.”

Long waits for Czech residency cards and work permits can have serious consequences, including lost income, missed job opportunities and legal limbo that can restrict access to vital services.

Expats.cz spoke with foreigners left in the lurch as well as the Czech authorities to find out why applications take so long — and what applicants can do about it.
