A lot of political decisions, even seriously important and controversial ones, don’t make an immediate and obvious impact on the everyday lives of ordinary people. But some do, and Brexit, the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union, has been an unavoidable fact of life for millions ever since Brits voted “Leave” in 2016.

Czechia is home to an estimated 8,000 British citizens. Now, this community faces renewed uncertainty after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham signaled a Brexit rethink.

Speaking at his Labour Party’s annual conference last week, Burnham said Brexit has “done more harm than good” and urged a reconsideration of the UK’s relationship with the EU. He called for all options to be considered, up to and including going “all the way” with full renewed EU membership.

Burnham’s comments will have left many UK nationals in Czechia wondering what the real likelihood of rejoining is, and how the country could – theoretically – get there.
