DOUGHY DELIGHTS

Adding to the boom of Italian bistros in Prague, Mensa is a new authentic pasta joint in Holešovice that passes the vibe check. With a cozy, dim-lit interior that looks plucked from a Roman piazza, Mensa serves up delicious appetizers and allows diners to select their own pasta type for the main meal. Top it off with a stellar tiramisu and a nightcap.

We’ve been treated to pasta galore with recent restaurant openings in the city, but Prague has been wanting for the Italian experience of dropping into a bakery for a fresh focaccia. Finally, Chleberia has brought a host of traditional recipes to Karlín, where they proclaim to transport customers “directly to the Italian coast” with pastries, fragrant breads, and more. Chleberia’s buns are used in many businesses around Prague including Hoxton Burgers and are sure to become a mainstay in the baked goods circuit.

Prague's Pan-Asian Pop

Okonomiyaki, a newly opened spot on Veletržní street inspired by Osaka's street food scene, serves up savory Japanese-style pancakes with a base of fried batter and white cabbage topped with signature sauce and mayonnaise. Chef Hiroki Komiya, who has helmed an okonomiyaki restaurant in Osaka since 2017, brought his craft to Prague after earning rave reviews at a 2022 cultural festival. Sports fans will appreciate the interior’s sporty vibe, complete with live broadcasts and a selection of Japanese beers.

Get a mug of matcha sourced directly from Japan at the new Sensu Cafe in Žižkov, where a sleek interior fit for an aesthetically pleasing Instagram grid combines expertly crafted drinks and desserts. Matcha isn’t the only tasty beverage that will fill your cup, with unique flavor combinations like the peanut butter latte also on the menu. Pair it with a fresh sweet or savory croissant or pain au chocolat.

While PHO 100 opened with great success back in November, it meant saying farewell to the beloved Taro previously in its place. Now fans of the flavorsome Asian fusion restaurant can look forward to its re-opening in New Town, which promises to be greater and bolder than before, on Jan. 24.

Metro Meets Bistro

From the innovative minds of Lukáš Žďárský and Jakub Zajíc, who together have established Prague favorites Vnitroblok and Gram under the team name Dudes & Barbies, comes a new cafe tucked behind Budějovická’s metro vestibule. Bistro B brightens up the oft dull-seeming space of Budějovická with warm colors of orange, beige, and brick, and caters to commuters passing through for some hearty breakfast, lunch, or tapas in the evening. Breakfast food is its specialty, with delicious herb omelettes, smoothie bowls, and eggs in a glass.

BBQ TOUCHDOWN

Homesick Americans can rejoice in two new kids on the block that are bringing the best of barbeque and sports to the city. Chef Isaac Starobin of Dirty Dog Barbeque, a favorite at Manifesto Market Anděl, is opening Isaac’s BBQ on Jan. 21 in the heart of New Town. His love of rustic BBQ cooking will be fused with fine dining cooking techniques for mouthwatering dishes that will challenge any superficial conceptions of American cuisine.

Have a feast full of finger-licking at Dejvice’s Guilty Pleasure, where burgers, ribs, and wings abound in a fun atmosphere of sports and socializing. This American diner streams the latest in American sports and will make for the perfect watering hole as the NFL season ramps up for the Superbowl early next month.

FITNESS FUEL STOP

In just a few days, a new health-focused concept opens in New Town, bringing quality ingredients to packed poke and salad bowls that are perfect for fitness freaks. Pick up a tasty, healthy wrap after a gym sesh and revitalize with a juice shot at Dean & David in the Máj shopping mall.
