There are no prizes for guessing that family life is when your expenses in Czechia really shoot up. Still, you might be taken aback by just how much having children in Prague can cost.

Especially in an age of inflated living costs, all the primary cost drivers see significant changes at this stage. Families may shift from renting to paying off a mortgage. Instead of relying entirely on public transport, they may decide they need a car.

The big weekly grocery shop replaces ad hoc, convenience-based habits. Pricey foreign trips and other discretionary items often take a back seat to spending on children.

For the sake of this analysis, we are imagining a four-member family with two children. We break down the typical costs into five categories: housing and utilities, food and groceries, transportation, discretionary spending, and children and education.

Family life has more variables than other life stages, but two choices make the biggest difference: housing (renting versus buying) and education (state versus private international school).
