Getting divorced creates enough upheaval and stress on its own, let alone in a country where you are also a foreigner. And if your residence status is based on your relationship, it introduces the additional stress of figuring out what impact the divorce may have on your future.
The most important thing to know, though, is that in this situation, divorce is not an automatic one-way ticket out of the country. There are a number of options that may be available.
Just separated? There’s no need to panic
One helpful piece of information to know at the outset is that separation is not recognized as a civil status in the Czech Republic. In other words, if you have only separated from your spouse, it is not necessary to inform the authorities.
A residence permit not based on the relationship gives you peace of mind
The first and main point to note is that if your current residence permit is not tied to your relationship—for example, you have residency based on employment, study or business—and it is still valid, then divorce should not affect your status. In this case, your residence permit is governed by its own specific rules.
