The Prague Feed: February 2016

Gossip, rumors, whispers: Vinohrady sensation Antonínovo pekařství will open a second bakery in Vršovice in 2016, while everyone’s favorite Beroun burger (Black Dog Bar and Grill) is planning a two-floor Prague expansion. JaM & Co. Asian fusion restaurant opens at the end of March on Francouzská 78 (h/t Czech Please).

Observing Dry February? Please skip to the next item: Bad Flash Bar in Vršovice has 12 taps and 300 bottled beers; we’re not sure Prague needs more modern speakeasies or bartenders sporting suspenders and newsies caps but too bad; Bootleggers Bar opened last month in Karlín and The Garrison comes to Prague 9. Letná dive bar Kyklop rounds out the list.

If you want a true speakeasy feel check out three-months-old Bokovka wine bar, secreted away in a crumbling courtyard off Dlouhá (look for the red drop sign, shining like a beacon in the night). Loved the local wine and cheese selection, exposed concrete interiors, andprojections of old movies on a loop.

New sushi coming soon: The Dlouhá passage will add Yami, a new concept Japanese bistro featuring a build-your-own sushi bar, to its list of tenants.

Vegetarian options continue to sprout up in Prague. Opened in late 2015, spacious Ethnosvet is a three-floor vegan bistro, shop, and culture space.

Looking forward to trying the just-opened Afghan family-run restaurant Behsud, sending out an array of fresh vegetarian options and traditional dishes like Kabuli palaw.

Our local favorite espresso bar Kafe Karlín has expanded to Smíchov train station as Kafe Kolej. Truly one of Prague’s friendliest coffee spots, and we wish them a lot of luck.

A large coffeehouse with a highly original name ( “Coffee Cafe”) has opened at the foot of Stepanská street and Wenceslas Square, and because it’s too weird not to mention, Pit Stop Cafe drive-in is now serving curbside espresso. 

Sleek new bakery Phil’s Corner brings another stylish dining spot (and Danish pastry!) to Holesovice; not to be outdone in the manly names department, Peter’s Apartment off Riegrák has breakfast by day and cocktails by night, and nearby at Tylák Czech baker Iveta Fabešová has opened IF her second cafe selling verines, macarons, and other fancy confections.

Get your spoons ready, from Feb 8-12, Prague’s Soup Whirlwind truck is at again, delivering gourmet goodness in a bowl for a charitable cause.

Purveyor of fine Spanish delicacies Sabores, has opened a tapas restaurant, Sabores Tapas & Vinos, in downtown Prague. Try Josper-grilled octopus with dainty potatoes and vegetable puree or a traditional tortilla paired with a nice rioja in this cozy venue; just right for Valentine’s Day.
