Salvation Army to Offer Japanese-Style Fabric Gift Wrapping

This Saturday at Nový Smíchov the ReShare Store pop-up stand will wrap your gifts using the furoshiki technique

The Salvation Army ReShare Store is a Prague 5 “boutique” offering imported secondhand clothing, the profit from which supports social projects and creating jobs for the disadvantaged.

While the organization is known worldwide for its long-time associations with the holidays—bell ringing Santas and the like—here in the Czech capital it will be offering shoppers a unique way to support the needy this holiday season, which quite literally ties together second-hand clothes and Christmas customs.

This weekend ReShare Store will be at Prague Nový Smíchov providing gift-wrapping services in the Japanese mode, using a technique called furoshiki which consists of using old shirts and other garments in lieu of the traditional paper-and-ribbon flourishes.  

Paul Vopeláková, spokesperson of the Salvation Army told Novinky.cz: “The method here is not as well known, in any event, the result looks very creative and original.”

Clothes from the store will be available for customers throughout the day at its pop-up stand as will representatives of the Salvation Army who are skilled in the ways of furoshiki wrapping. 

Proceeds from the purchase of clothing and the symbolic fee for the wrapping service will be donated to the Salvation Army’s primary activity, helping those in need.
