Prague Tram to Become Mobile Church

For this year’s Church Night on June 10, Prague's tram 22 will become a mobile parish complete with a miniature organ

More than 300 churches throughout the Czech Republic will open their doors to visitors on June 10 as part of the country’s Noc kostelů (Church Night), giving locals a glimpse into buildings they may only be familiar with from the outside.

And in Prague, one very special new church will be unveiled for the event: Tram 22, which will become a mobile parish from 18:00 to 22:00 between the Malovanka and Čechovo náměstí stops.

Patrons of the mobile church can expect familiar sights such as a priest, a cross, and the eternal light. There will even be a pipe organ, albeit of the smaller portative variety.

Along the journey, travellers can listen to talks from Bishop Václav Malý, Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka, and preacher Daniel Fajfr, as well as author Alena Ježková and art historian Jan Royt.

If you can’t make it aboard tram 22, don’t worry: the entire journey, spiritual and otherwise, will be streamed live on YouTube.

Believe it or not, tram 22 isn’t the first church to ride the rails in the Czech Republic. In 1975, the entire Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Most was transported nearly a kilometer after most of the city was destroyed due to coal mining, setting a Guinness World Record for heaviest object transported on tracks. 

Tram 22’s Church Night motto?

“We go farther than Most.”
