Prague Is One of the Most Literary Cities In the World Says New Survey

Travel search engine Expedia has chosen the Czech capital as a top destination for book lovers citing its café culture and high concentration of bookstores

Expedia has released a roundup of the most “literary-inspired” cities around the globe. The travel search engine says the list emerged from a recent survey it conducted which found that over 78 percent of respondents said that books have inspired their vacations.

Prague was chosen for its historical café culture and associations with a number of literary greats:

The setting for many famous novels, including the “Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “Prague Tales,” this UNESCO City of Literature’s part in bolstering the written word unfolded in cozy cafes, literary salons, and scholarly circles that included the likes of Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, and Bohumil Hrabal.

The list also weighed in on each city’s number of bookstores, literary cred, writing programs, and literary events.

One of the highest concentrations of bookstores in Europe includes gems such as Globe (an English-language bookstore and café), Shakespeare and Sons (one of the best in the city, and also hosts author events), and PageFive (a newer, innovative bookstore and publishing house).

We do have to raise an eyebrow at a lit-travel listicle that overlooks the Paris of Stein, Wilde, Hemingway, and Joyce or the indie bookstores of London or New York; we would also point visitors to Prague in the direction of the new virtual reality exhibit based on Kafka’s most famous short story as well as one of the Czech capital’s most magnificent libraries.
