New York Times Taps Brno as 2016 Place to Go

The US newspaper cites Brno – and not Czech capital Prague – among 52 cities across the world to visit this year

Is Brno becoming the Czech Republic’s city to be in 2016? The Moravian capital seems to be outpacing Prague with top notices in international press in recent weeks.

Cost of living comparison website Numbeo recently ranked Brno as one of the top 20 cities in Europe (and 46th in the world) in their quality of life index for 2016. Prague came in at 24 in Europe and 58 in the world. For comparison, London came in at 104 and New York 109; Australia’s Canberra and Adelaide topped the list.

Now, the New York Times has tapped Brno as one of their “52 Places to Go in 2016.”

Mexico City tops the list, while Malta, Bordeaux (France) and Skane (Sweden) also feature in the top 10, though the logic behind the rankings isn’t specified.  

Brno comes in at 27, behind Dublin (22) and Vaud, Switzerland (25), and ahead of Barcelona (29) and Turin (31). Prague is absent from the list.  

“Known mostly for its minimalist architecture, the Czech Republic’s second city is finally starting to earn praise for its food and drink,” writes Evan Rail for the Times.

Rail recommends new bars Super Panda Circus and Lucky Bastard Beerhouse and restaurants Simplé, Pavillon, Il Mercato and Koishi as some of the city’s highlights.

Among the Czech Republic’s most-talked about cities, Brno has always come in behind the country’s much-loved capital. At the outset of 2016, however, things are looking a little different.
