Czech spa travel tends to point west, toward the grand resort towns around Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně. But tucked into the foothills of the Jizera Mountains, about 25 kilometers from Liberec near the Polish border, a less-discovered spa town offers a change of scene from Prague.
In Lázně Libverda, the way you spend your day is entirely up to you. Unplug from the city for a weekend escape, or settle in for a week of mineral baths, walks and bike rides. More visitors are also using this area as a base for remote work, where a morning "at the office" gives way to an afternoon that feels like time off.
There is a particular pleasure in closing your laptop, stepping outside and having nowhere urgent to be. In this lesser-known part of Czechia, there is plenty to do and little reason to hurry.
Modern wellness rooted in tradition
Sure, you’ll still find a grand colonnade and elegant promenades here. But Lázně Libverda opens onto forested hills, so a spa day need not keep you indoors. The town’s mineral springs play a central role in this laid-back atmosphere, with therapies built around these healing waters for generations.
Today, treatments including carbonated mineral baths, sports massages and peat wraps are specifically designed to target the very things that can leave city dwellers feeling worn down, from chronic stress and desk-related posture problems to mental fatigue. A tailored regeneration plan can bring several treatments together into one personalized multi-day spa stay package.
The resort’s accommodation adds to the choice. Hotel Panorama sits above the colonnade, Hotel Lesní Zátiší is set in the forest, and Villa Friedland occupies a four-star villa in the spa park. At the latter, a sauna and jacuzzi are also available for private hire.
There is also plenty of room to make the experience your own. Days can be spent at the pool and sauna followed by a refreshing walk through the spa grounds. After a morning spent at your laptop, swap the screen for a bike ride. Then leave your muddy shoes by the door and head straight for a mineral bath and let the rest of the day unfold from there.
Outdoor exploration and cultural adventures to fill your days
In Lázně Libverda, you don't have to choose between wellness and being active. The area’s famous hiking routes pass dramatic viewpoints like Ořešník, waterfalls, and the distinctive peat bogs of the highlands. The forest and mountain trails begin close to the resort, so a relaxing treatment can easily be followed by an afternoon hike or bike ride.
For mountain bikers, the main attraction is Singltrek pod Smrkem, a network of nearly 80 kilometers of narrow forest trails winding through the countryside around Mount Smrk. With routes designed for different levels of ability, it can occupy an entire day or become a shorter outing between spa treatments. You don't even have to bring a bike from Prague to make the most of it, as bikes and electric bikes can be rented locally.
There are plenty of reasons to venture beyond the trails, too. Nearby Hejnice is home to a striking Baroque pilgrimage basilica, while Frýdlant offers a castle and chateau to explore. And then there is Obří sud, the enormous wooden barrel built in 1931 that houses a restaurant serving traditional Czech food alongside stunning panoramas.
A change of scene for the working week
Can’t take a full week off work? With its high-speed connectivity, peaceful surroundings, and mountain air, Lázně Libverda makes it easy to recharge while staying on top of what’s happening in the office. Tackle your project emails in the morning, treat yourself to a therapeutic treatment in the afternoon, and wrap up the day with a trail ride or a twilight walk through the town’s 19th-century colonnade.
Staying longer means you don’t have to squeeze a spa holiday, a mountain escape and a working week into separate trips. There is time for a full day on the trails, an unhurried afternoon in a mineral bath and, if you need it, a few hours at your desk in between.
