The turn of the year brought fundamental legal changes to Czech maternity wards, significantly strengthening the autonomy of women during childbirth.

These reforms, outlined in full here by parental advocacy group Aperio, codify the right to obstetric dignity through several key pillars.

Mothers now have a legally protected right to free and informed consent, allowing them to refuse routine interventions like episiotomies without pressure, and the right to continuous contact with their child, who cannot be separated from them without a court order or immediate life-threatening emergency.

Furthermore, hospitals are now strictly prohibited from charging "fees" for the presence of a partner or doula, and must respect birth plans and preferred labor positions, ensuring that medical care balances clinical safety with personal autonomy and respectful treatment.

Beyond the delivery room, several new rulings and reforms have taken effect in recent months that impact new and expecting parents.
