Flogging Molly is coming back to Prague once again, this time bringing their brand of Celtic punk to the Roxy on June 10th.

Flogging Molly promises to deliver a raucous night of fiddle fueled sing-a-longs.  You can meet your end of the bargain by coming prepared to dance and sing until you have blisters on your toes, and your voice is so raspy that you are having a tough time ordering your next beer.

In recent years Flogging Molly went from being a hidden treasure that those “in-the-know” clued you in on, to being a band with two top 40 singles on the US modern rock charts.  Flogging Molly isn´t the story of overnight success.  This is the story of a band that has worked long and hard to achieve their notoriety and well deserved acclaim.

Their first visit to Prague in 2006 was made legendary by their propensity for merriment.  They played on an incredibly hot July night at a sold out Klub 007.  This would have totally wiped out another band. not Flogging Molly.  They delivered a second acoustic set “after hours” to their loyal fans on the grass in front of the club before they had even had a chance to change out of the sweaty t-shirts they had earned downstairs in the club itself.

On the heels of their 2008 album, Float, Flogging Molly promise to deliver a mixed set of old favorites and fresh tunes.  A Flogging Molly show at Roxy is not as intimate as 007, and the crowd is sure to be much bigger, but, one thing is certain, Flogging Molly will not send you home until there is a smile on your face, and a permanent place in your heart for their spirited song.

We have had the opportunity to ask Robert Schmidt, banjo and mandolin player for Flogging Molly a few questions about the band´s roots, influences, songs, favorite pastimes and what lies ahead for them.

How did Flogging Molly come to be?

We all met at Molly Malone’s, a bar in Los Angeles.

How has the music changed over the years?

I think we are more confident and willing to do things that people wouldn’t expect of us.

How was the culture of the band changed since you first got your start?

Well, we are older now for sure. Maybe we drink a little less. We’re definitely better friends after all this time.

So many influences can be seen and heard in your music, what would you say were the major influences evident in your most recent album, Float (2008),  as compared to your first album, Swagger (2000)?

Maybe Johnny Cash, as he died before we started writing for Float. Joe Strummer and Ronnie Drew for sure.

What is your favorite Flogging Molly song? Why?

‘If I ever leave this world alive´. I think it’s just a great song.

Is everyone in the band a fulltime musician? Do you have other jobs and interests? What do you do when you´re not touring or in the studio?

Yeah, this is our full time gig. Of course we all have other interests I have a new daughter, so I spend slot of time at home with my family. I also do a lot of writing and recording.

What are your plans after this tour? Will we see you back in Europe soon? Any plans to head back into the studio?

We will be back to Europe in August, we’re doing the Warped Tour in July, a short US tour in September, and a Canadian tour in October. We’re starting writing now and hope to have an album out in the Fall of next year. We’ll see how it goes!

We look forward to seeing you at the Roxy on June 10th!
