What does “truth and love” mean in today’s world, and does it still matter?
This spring, Expats.cz is partnering with Opero to present Truth and Love 2.0: Living Philosophy of Václav Havel, a three-part English-language lecture series exploring the enduring ideas of Václav Havel and their relevance in a time of global uncertainty.
Held at Opero, the series offers an intimate setting for reflection, discussion, and big-picture thinking, part lecture, part self-development journey.
The series
Led by renowned Czech economist and thinker Tomáš Sedláček, Truth and Love 2.0: Living Philosophy of Václav Havel goes beyond traditional lectures. Framed as a philosophical feast, it connects personal questions of meaning with broader civilizational challenges.
Across three Sunday evenings, the program traces key strands of Czech and European thought, from reformer Jan Hus to educator Jan Amos Komenský, statesman Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, and ultimately Havel himself.
What to expect
Each session explores a different theme, blending philosophy, history, and contemporary questions:
May 17: Algorithms and the Soul
In an age shaped by artificial intelligence and postmodern uncertainty, where does human meaning come from? This opening session asks whether technology is beginning to replace not just our labor, but our thinking, and what that means for society.
May 31: The Spirit of Europe in the Shadow of MAGA
What defines Europe today? This talk examines geopolitics through a philosophical lens, contrasting power politics with the influence of ideas and values.
June 14: The Power of the Powerless 2.0
Revisiting one of Havel’s most influential concepts, the final session explores how individuals can reclaim agency in a fragmented world and whether a revolution of the spirit is still possible.
Why it matters
As global crises, political shifts, and rapid technological change reshape everyday life, the series asks a timely question: is the search for meaning becoming the new luxury?
Rather than offering simple answers, Truth and Love 2.0: Living Philosophy of Václav Havel creates space to engage with ideas that have shaped Czech identity and continue to resonate across Europe.
